Outline of Research at the Start

日本がホストするスーパーBファクトリー（SuperKEKB/Belle II）実験に関して、国内外の実験-加速器-理論の研究グループ間の強固な連携により、同実験の衝突性能と物理探索能力を究極的に高め、標準理論を超える物理の発見を目指す。そのために、国内外の研究機関の間での双方向の研究交流や人材還流を強化して、KEKでの実験遂行と地球規模での機器開発や物理研究を進める。以上の研究をとおして、将来の国際共同加速器プロジェクトをリードする人材を育成する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、スーパーBファクトリー（SuperKEKB/Belle II）実験を舞台として、国内外の実験-理論-加速器の強固な連携により、同実験の衝突性能と物理探索能力を究極的に高め、標準理論を超える物理の発見を目指している。
同実験では、2022年夏までに世界最高衝突性能の更新と、先行実験であるBelle実験の約半分のデータ蓄積を達成した後に長期運転休止期間に入り、加速器と検出器の一部装置の入れ替えを進めており、2023年においても継続的にこれを進めた。具体的には、Belle II崩壊点検出器（PXDとSVD）の入れ替え、粒子識別装置（TOP）の光センサー（MCP-PMT）の交換作業等を国際共同で進めた。加速器では、ビーム入射部の改良、新しいコリメータや遮蔽の導入を進め、2024年1月末から運転を再開した。また、突発的なビーム損失現象（SBL: Sudden Beam Loss）など、運転上の問題に関するスタディを実験と加速器研究者が協力して進めた。
データ解析では、暗黒物質の候補となる軽い新粒子の探索、ミューオン異常磁気能率の検証に重要となる電子-陽電子衝突断面積測定、B中間子崩壊におけるCP対称性の破れ、小林-益川行列要素の測定、レプトン普遍性の検証に関する初期データによる結果導出を進めた。特に、B中間子がK中間子とニュートリノ対に崩壊する稀崩壊過程（B→Kνν）の証拠を世界に先駆けて発見し、また、B中間子のセミレプトニック崩壊におけるレプトン普遍性の検証に関するBelle II実験の最初の結果を得た。
これらのLS1期間中の作業やデータ解析の推進は国際共同で進み、本科研費研究に参画する若手研究者が大きく貢献している。

Current Status of Research Progress

Reason

研究実績の概要に記述したLS1中の検出器と加速器の一部装置の入れ替えでは、新しく準備した崩壊点検出器の設置時に、検出器と加速器装置の空間的な干渉が発生したが、実験と加速器、海外コラボレータとの緊密な解決を図り、遅れを最小化した。その他のTOP検出器の光センサー交換やデータ収集系のアップグレード、新しいコリメータや遮蔽の導入は予定通りに進めることができた。
今後の同実験の衝突性能の改善のためには、加速器ビーム電流の増加を妨げているSBLの解明や、加速器リングへの入射効率の改善、ビーム起因の検出器バックグランドの抑制など、加速器と検出器のインターフェース（MDI: Machine-Detector Interface）に関する研究推進が必須である。この観点では、本研究によって実験と加速器の連携が大きく進み、ビーム診断に必要となるモニター類の強化、機械学習による加速器運転の自動制御などの研究が進んでいる。
これまでにBelle II実験で蓄積されたデータ量は、先行実験であるBelle実験の約半分に留まっているものの、より優れた検出器性能や機会学習の導入によるデータ解析の高効率化によって、従来の結果に匹敵あるいはそれを上回る精度・感度での多くのデータ解析結果が得られた。研究実績概要に記したB→Kνν崩壊の証拠発見や、B中間子のセミレプトニック崩壊におけるレプトン普遍性の検証結果導出はその好例である。2023年中に16編の雑誌論文を発表した。
新型コロナ感染症が５類に引き下げられる中で、2023年６月には名古屋大学においてBelle II国際コラボレーション会議を開催し、本科研費研究の推進に関する海外研究者との議論・検討も進んだ。4名の若手研究者を海外研究機関に派遣し、実験、加速器、理論に関する共同研究を進めた。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度の研究計画としては、LS1後に再開したSuperKEKB/Belle II実験の運転とデータ収集を継続的に進め、実験と加速器の連携により、これまでの２倍強となる1×10^35cm^-1s^-1の衝突性能と世界最高となる1ab^-1を超える衝突データの蓄積を目指す。これと並行して、2027年以降に予定しているLS2（Long Shutdown 2）での加速器と測定器のアップグレードの概念設計を進める。LS1前までに蓄積されたデータ解析を進め、従来の実験結果に匹敵あるいはそれを上回る精度・感度での結果導出を図る。実験と理論が連携して、同実験でB中間子とともに大量に生成されるタウレプトンの崩壊測定による新物理探索に関するワークショップ等を開催して、得られたデータ解析結果の解釈や、今後のデータ解析の方針を議論する。その後の計画としては、2027年頃までに先行実験の5倍のデータ蓄積を進めるとともに、2030年代の前半までに50倍に及ぶデータ収集を可能とすることを目指して加速器と測定器のアップグレードに関する基礎開発を進める。先行実験の数倍のデータが収集できた段階で、B崩壊に関する精密測定結果を導出し、最終的には、実験-理論の共同解析により、BSMの兆候を見出すあるいはそのモデルに制限をつける共同解析を進めてゆく。
こうした研究推進と連動して、2023年度から進めているポスドク雇用、海外若手派遣、国内インターンシップ、若手プロジェクト研究などの人材育成プログラムを継続して進める。
