Outline of Research at the Start

本事業では、宇宙の最初に誕生した星を、世界最高精度の望遠鏡を駆使して探査し、その後どのような過程を経て、我々が住む銀河系や銀河団が誕生したのかを多角的にアプローチする。日本が持つ高い技術開発力と、すばる望遠鏡のユニークなデータセットを武器に、これから主導を取る海外の巨大望遠鏡を利用した国際共同研究に参画し、その中で日本の若手研究者を中堅的な役割を果たせるよう育成していく。
若手育成においては我々が独自に考案した持続可能な育成プログラム(M3eX)により、日本の天文学コミュニティ全体に波及させる。また渡航先も拡大させ、定期的な研究会を開催することで、日本の当該分野におけるプレゼンスを高める。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的は、宇宙の最初期に誕生した星がやがて銀河を形成し、その中でどのように大質量ブラックホールが形成され、やがて銀河団へと成長してきたのか、という宇宙の様々な時代における構造の形成史について、最新の観測機器を用いて統一的・連続的に理解することを目的とする。このために、国立天文台・名古屋大学・千葉大学・大阪大学・京都大学・東北大学に所属する、理論・観測・実験という幅広い分野にまたがる研究者組織を構築した。これにより、日本がこれまですばる望遠鏡で技術・科学の両面でリードしてきた経験を更に発展させ、30年に一度しか実現しない1兆円規模の米国の巨大観測プロジェクトJWSTをはじめ、Rubinや欧州のELTなど、世界最高峰の光赤外観測装置を配した研究機関に若手研究者を次々と参入させる。
本年度は、22件の大学院生・若手研究者の海外滞在支援を行った。滞在先はアメリカ、ドイツ、イタリア、フランス、で多岐にわたる共同研究を行った。また、その結果20件の投稿論文を出版するなどの業績を得ている。また、本年度は2名の研究員を雇用し、大学院生とシニア研究者とをうまくつなぐ架け橋として研究面、滞在生活面の両方でサポート体制を強化している。国際研究会も4件開催し、国内外におけるプレゼンスを高めた。

Reason

2023年4月1日以降に滞在を開始し、2024年3月31日までに帰国した者はのべ22件であり、アメリカ(スタンフォード、カリフォルニア工科大学、アリゾナ大学、UCLA、UCBerkley)、イタリア(トリエステ、フィレンツェ、ミラノビコッカ、ボローニャ)、英国(ダーラム大学)、ドイツ(マックスプランク研究所)に合計639日滞在した。当初予定していた滞在先を中心としつつも、さまざまな共同研究が発展し、滞在先の多様性も増えてきている。一方でJWSTの成果を用いたサイエンスなど本事業の基軸となるサイエンスは遅れることなく進行しており、世界をリードする研究成果が上がりつつある。
2023年5月には国立天文台で立ち上げ研究会を行った。海外から数十名の研究協力者を招聘し、また日本国内からも代表分担者の所属する学生に限らず、広く参加を求め、総勢100名程度の大規模な研究会となり今後の本事業を力強く後押しする研究会となった。また9月には本事業で製作する中間帯域フィルターに関するワークショップを開催、11月には理論班を中心としたワークショップを開催、いずれも海外から研究協力者を招待し、立ち上げ研究会ではできなかったより精細な研究に立ち入った議論を行った。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

運用1年を通して実感したことは、やはり円高や物価高騰により、滞在費、装置製作費用ともに申請当初よりも値上がりしており、予定通りの運用に疑問が出てきている。当面は外部資金との合算使用や、なるべく安価な滞在場所を確保するなどの自助努力により計画を完遂させるべく進めている。
一方で、研究面については特に目立った遅れ等は発生しておらず、予定通り堅実に共同研究が進行している。今後も適宜オンライン会議等をうまく組み合わせて当初の予定通り共同研究を遂行する予定である。
