Outline of Research at the Start |
A growing literature is studying food charities, but a meso-level understanding and cross-country comparison are lacking. The project bridges research on the field of food support in the UK with new data from interviews with food charities in Japan to explore how food support systems are organized.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The duration of the research was reduced due to the departure of the international fellow, but fieldwork was nevertheless carried out according to plan. We undertook 19 in-depth interviews of food charities and related organizations in Kyoto. The information was systematically code using QDA miner software; and a comprehensive dataset of food charities in Kyoto was developed. It was found that, compared to Europe, the food charity sector in Japan is still under development, with as a relatively unique feature the proliferation of numerous children’s canteens (子ども食堂).
Two articles were published and 1 article is currently being drafted. One international conference presentation and 3 invited presentations were made. We also organized 1 international workshop.
