Outline of Research at the Start

宇宙開発の基盤として人類が月を利用する未来がすぐそこにまで来ており、月面への中継基地となる月周回有人拠点(Gateway)の建設準備が米国を中心に進められている。安心・安全に月周辺の宇宙空間を利用していくためには、そこで生起する電磁気現象を大きく左右する背景プラズマイオン組成を詳しく調べておくことが非常に重要である。この研究では、2025年から建設が始まるGatewayの船外に搭載予定のHERMES観測装置で得られるイオンフラックスデータを解析し、「太陽風起源、月起源、地球起源の多種多様なイオンは、月周辺のプラズマ環境にそれぞれどの程度寄与しているのか?」という問いに答えることを目的とする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

宇宙開発の基盤として人類が月を利用する未来がすぐそこにまで来ており、月面への中継基地となる月周回有人拠点(Gateway)の建設準備が米国を中心に進められている。安心・安全に月周辺の宇宙空間を利用していくためには、そこで生起する電磁気現象を大きく左右する背景プラズマイオン組成を詳しく調べておくことが非常に重要である。この研究では、2026年から建設が始まるGatewayの船外に搭載予定のHERMES観測装置で得られるイオンフラックスデータを解析し、「太陽風起源、月起源、地球起源の多種多様なイオンは、月周辺のプラズマ環境にそれぞれどの程度寄与しているのか?」という問いに答えることを目的とする。
今年度は、将来的にHERMESのデータを利用する際の事前準備として、かぐや衛星に搭載されたIMA観測器が取得したデータを解析した。かぐや衛星が地球磁気圏尾部のローブ領域またはプラズマシート領域に滞在している期間に注目し、IMA観測器が地球から流れてきているイオンを観測できる時間帯(衛星の太陽天頂角が90度近い値の時間帯)のデータを用いた。2008年6月19日、2008年7月16日、2009年6月7日、2009年6月8日の4日間について、そのような時期に注目して解析したところ、普段に較べて非常に多くのO+が観測されており、そのO+は月面から直接の方向よりは、地球方向から来ている量のほうが多いことが分かった。これらのイベントは、Dst指数が-10~-20 nT程度の地磁気擾乱としてはそれほど大きくない時期に起こっていることから、地球からは常に継続してO+が流れ出しており、それが38万km離れた月まで到達しうることを示している。この成果を論文としてまとめ、査読付き国際学術雑誌に投稿した(現在査読中)。

Reason

かぐや衛星のデータ解析に関しては予定通り進んでおり、静穏時であっても地球起源のO+イオンが38万km離れた月軌道まで流れ着いている様子が確認できた。また、この成果を国際学術誌であるEarth, Planets and Space誌に投稿した。ただ、研究課題提案当初、Gateway/HERMESの稼働は2025年とされていたが、NASAから、Gateway計画全体が遅れており、HERMESの観測は2026年以降に開始予定という発表がなされた。こちらは不可避の状況であるが、引き続き、状況の推移を注意深く見守っている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Gateway/HERMESの観測実施は2026年からなので、それに向けての準備を行う。月面高度約100 kmの低高度を周回して月周辺のイオン組成を計測していた「かぐや」衛星のデータを統計解析する。ただし、Gatewayのように月周辺の広い高度領域を調べることはできないので、地球起源と思われるO+イオンや月起源と思われるNa+, Al+イオンなどが、磁気圏尾部中において、どの様な時に観測され、どの場所で観測されるかについて解析を行う。研究協力者(原田)は、これまでにかぐや衛星の観測データを利用した経験があるため、主に能勢と原田でこの課題に取り組む。研究成果について、学会での発表や論文出版を行う。また、かぐやのデータ解析結果やHERMESデータ解析計画について、海外共同研究者であるGlocer博士やHERMES/IDSチームの研究者と定期的にインターネット会議によって議論する。
