Outline of Final Research Achievements

Western mathematics and astronomy books were translated into Chinese by Jesuit missionaries from the end of Ming to the beginning of Qing China. Those books call Chinese books on Western calendrical calculations. The eighth shogun Yoshimune Tokugawa partially relaxed the prohibited book policy in 1720. This political change enabled Japanese calendrical calculators to read Chinese books on Western calendrical calculations. We studied on the transmission of Chinese books on Western calendrical calculations in the Edo period and on the influence upon Japanese.
In the 1726 Lisuan quan shu was introduced, Kakahino Takabe and Genkei Nakane translated it into Japanese immediately. Japanese comprehend importance of trigonometry through study of this book. Astronomer Yoshitoki Takahashi and Shigetomi Hazama learned the isochronism of pendulum and the law of free falling from study of Lingtai yixiang shi and Xiyang xinfa lishu. Y.Takahashi also understood the ocean navigation from them.
