Research Abstract |
At the Berlin Conservatory of Music from 1900-1902, Mitsuzo Yoshimoto (1863-1907), one of the naval bandmasters of Japan, studied as a "bandmaster student". After returning to Japan, he served as the bandmaster of the Second Battle Fleet's flagship "Izumo" during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905. This study aims to examine his diaries from the viewpoints of the musical exchange between Europe and Japan at that time. The results are as follows: 1) Europeans became to considerably recognize Japanese music from Japanese theatrical troupes and Yoshimoto's transcriptions of Japanese songs. 2) From 1908, the Japanese Navy adopted a specialized educational program for bandmaster candidates at the Tokyo Conservatory of Music. It is very likely that it was modeled after the Berlin Conservatory of Music's program. 3) During the war, the naval band played not only for daily duties, but also during operations and ceremonies for the war dead. Biwa and shakuhachi, were also played privately.
