Research Abstract |
As the result of my study on Thoreau's educational philosophy during the past three years, I wrote and published three papers: "Thoreau as Seen by Louisa May Alcott" in Japanese, "Thoreau and Freedom" in English, and "The Significance of the Cycle of the Seasons in Relation to 'Growth'" in Japanese. These papers are included in the collections of academic papers published by the societies to which I belong: The Thoreau Society of Japan and The American Literature Society of Japan in Tohoku. Also, I published a book in English titled Henry D. Thoreau: His Educational Philosophy and Observation of Nature. This was published from Otowa-shobo Tsurumi-shoten in 2013. It has five parts: Prologue, Thoreau as Teacher and His Personality, Thoreau's Views on Nature and Art, Thoreau's Views on the Seasons, and Epilogue. It focuses on how his views on education are influenced by his observations of nature and how he valued adult education as well as teaching his students.
