Research Abstract |
This research has revealed multiple characteristics of the Japanese reception of Oscar Wilde through the comparative study of the reception of Wilde in Japan and in English-speaking countries. A more balanced research into the reception than in previous research was carried out by placing more importace on the reception of Wilde's comedies, which have heretofore not drawn enough attention in Japan. Although the main focus of this study was on the dramatic works and the theatrical reception of Wilde, this project proceeded from multifarious angles, including other genres of his work than his plays, in order to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the reception of Wilde's plays, thus deepening an analysis of the multifaceted layers of Wilde's reception.
