Research Abstract |
The relationship between James Joyce and the cinema has not been studied. It is quite well known among Joyce scholars that Joyce was involved in the project of opening the first cinema theatre, The Volta in Dublin. But no Joyce scholar has ever established which films Joyce showed there or the influences of those films. Luke McKernan, an English Cinema Studies scholar, investigated the remains of the films shown at the Volta Theater and noted in which archives these films are kept, and wrote an article about them in 2004. I have decided to study all the surviving films stored in archives around the world and to elucidate the direct influences on Joyce's novels of these silent films.
