Research Abstract |
During Japanese Middle Ages, there were documents to make pledges called "Kisho-mon". They include details of pledges and the term "If I made a lie, I would be punished by Gods and Buddha". Before this investigation, it was said that the oldest document is the one kept in Todaiji-temple, Nara and the document was made in 1148. However, I set up a new theory that Kanjo-gata Kisho-mon was started to be made before the Middle Ages. The document includes the term to invite Gods and Buddha, details of the pledge, and the same term about the punishment. In 2007, a Mokkan written as it was made in 1137 was found in the remains of Shiozu port located on north shore of Biwako lake. We concluded it is a Kanjo-gata Kisho-mon. This investigation corrected the start of Kisho-mon with the new source.
