Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project, as set out in its initial proposal, was aimed at completing the case study of negotiation and mediation processes in the Tajikistan civil war and as an extension of it, also laying the foundations for a more comprehensive theory development on peace negotiations and mediation diplomacy in situations of violent conflicts, especially internal ones. More specifically, the project addressed the following four major themes: (1) mediatory roles played by a variety of actors such as states, the United Nations, regional organizations, and NGOs; (2) collaboration and coordination among these heterogeneous mediators; (3) timing of international mediation efforts; and (4) consensus building on international mediation plans. I am intending to publish research results in the near future about implications and lessons of the Tajik peace process, the UN’s changing roles in conflict mediation, and concepts of“ripeness,”among others.
