Research Abstract

A total of 22 early-onset group B Streptococcus disease and 4 late-onset group B Streptococcus disease were investigated. We examined microbiological characteristics of invasive isolates from group B Streptococcus disease the neonates (n=10) and colonized isolates from the neonatal pharynx (n=55) and from the genital tract of pregnant and puerperal women (n=194). All isolates were susceptible to penicillin. These findings suggest that to date, penicillin remains effective in intrapartum prophylactic use in colonized pregnant women. The present findings suggest that further investigation regarding the issue of false-negative results during antenatal group B Streptococcus screening is required in order to prevent neonatal group B Streptococcus disease.
