Outline of Research at the Start

My project will trace the transition from Enlightenment idealization of the Cook accounts through to more critical Romantic intermedial collaborations to the quasi-ethnographic depictions created by nineteenth-century missionaries.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In January 2025, I published a book chapter “Footnotes to History: Marginalizing Polynesia in Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘The Song of Rahero’ and ‘The Feast of Famine’” in Tomoe Kumojima and Laurence Williams’s edited collection Pacific Gateways: Trans-Oceanic Narratives and Anglophone Literature, 1780-1914 (Palgrave Macmillan).
I also submitted four book chapters for four different edited collections in 2024. These collections are scheduled to be published in 2025 to 2027.
In March 2025, I signed a contract with Bloomsbury to publish a monograph based on my kakenhi project in their new “Global Nineteenth Century” series. The book is prospectively to be entitled “Pacific Paratexts: Marginality, Ethnography and Indigeneity in Anglophone Writing on the Pacific, 1768-1922” and due for final submission in March 2026.
I gave papers at international conferences at NASSR Romantic Insurrections (Washington DC) in August 2024, the Japan Association for English Romanticism Conference (Kyoto) in October 2024, and World Literature and Intermediality (Edinburgh) in March 2025. Asahi Shimbun published an interview with me about aspects of my research in November 2024. I was appointed on the advisory board of the Edinburgh University Press book series “Edinburgh Critical Studies in World Literature and Intermediality”.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

My personal research proceeded as planned. I reorganized the planned conference on Pacific Intermediality into a special symposium that took place in October 2024.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

For the forthcoming year, I have been accepted to give a paper entitled “The Atlantic Pacific: Goerg Forster’s representation of race in ‘A Voyage Round the World’ (1776/7)” at the NASSR online conference August 14-16 2025. I also plan to give a paper at “Living/Building” the joint Romantic Studies Association of Australia Conference at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, 26-28 November 2025 and perhaps at Japan Association for English Romanticism (mooted for October). Otherwise I will focus on completing my book.
