| Outline of Research at the Start |
This project develops an online tool which identifies genre specific errors in computer-science academic writing; errors which are not detected in generic grammar checking tools. The tool then provides dynamic feedback to users. The learning benefits of the tool are investigated longitudinally.
|
| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We made steady progress in year two. Interested parties can view more video demonstrations of the tool at http://dynawrite.org We have been successful in leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to create two types of tasks for learners. The first provides graduated feedback on learner writing which focuses on grammatical accuracy. The second focuses the genre of computer science academic writing. Valuable assistance from experts in the field was gained through attendance at the the XXIX Annual Sociocultural Theory and Second Language Learning Research Working Group Meeting. Preliminary results have been written up and are currently under review.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We are progressing reasonably smoothly. Our first round of data collection has just been completed. Participant feedback was positive, we them attributing learning being derived from a combination of use of the tool and teacher instruction. Participants also identified adjusts we can make to increase usability of the tool. We also believe we have found better ways to utilize the tool to further enhance learning. Based on this, we plan to make further adjustments to the tool to conduct a further round of data collection. We are also now at the stage where we can begin to prepare results for publication, which have already done. We plan to present at multiple conferences this year, and prepare multiple papers/chapters for publication.
|
| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In this final year, we plan on further updating the tool based on the first round of data collection and participant feedback. Specifically, these updates involve ensuring that the graduated feedback the tool provides utilizes simpler English or provides the option for the feedback to be received in Japanese. We plan on conducting subsequent rounds of data collection in June and again in October 2025. The results of this data will analyzed later in 2025, and we are planning on submitting these for publication and/or presentation at conferences. We currently have two papers/chapters under review for the project. We are also presenting at two international conferences this year.
