Outline of Research at the Start
This research analyses the intellectual conditions that have fostered principles and approaches toward multidisciplinary research (MDR) within contemporary Japanese Southeast Asian studies. Through a quantitative and qualitative approach, it examines Japanese researchers’ relations to knowledge production trends, their own fields of research, and how these condition research initiatives. Ultimately, it aims to clarify the nature of Japanese MDR and its intellectual contribution within global Southeast Asian Studies.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements
In the second year of the project, we focused on the third research stage: interviewing domestic researchers at Japanese institutions. Participants were selected based on their sustained involvement in academic projects and collaborations. We are now analysing and categorising the interview data to cross-reference with the database compiled in the previous year. Lopez and Fujieda have created social network maps illustrating the individual research networks of the interviewees. The overall resulting database provides a unique snapshot of the research ecology in Southeast Asian studies from 1964 to 2023. We are currently preparing visual representations across decades to highlight broad trends in knowledge production within the field.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is progressing on schedule. We are currently conducting domestic interviews with Japanese researchers in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, aiming to generate an empirically robust dataset that captures their collaborative research networks. For the preliminary analysis, Lopez was affiliated with the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield.

Strategy for Future Research Activity
As this is the final year of the project, we aim to present our findings at several academic conferences and prepare publications to disseminate the outcomes to the academic community.
