Outline of Research at the Start

Data-gathering: survey digitized archives (JACAR, WHO IRIS, UN Lib-Arch, etc.); physical archives fieldwork in 3 locations (NY, TKY, SWI); interviews. Outputs: 2 conferences, 3 peer-reviewed papers, 1 podcast for hosting interviews (full consent, GSID ethics approval).

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

As stated in proposal, first two years focus on scoping, therefore requested funds low (100,000 yen). Funds spent on: Tokyo trip for GRIPS lecture (21 Mar. 2024) and books. PI attended Global Health Diplomacy workshop as observer (16-17 Dec. 2023), arranged by iGHP, and researched UN Lib Arch. Geneva for a lecture on history of Japan's UHC.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As stated, scoping activities were planned and activities focused on documentary research + attending online sessions. The Global Health Diplomacy Workshop was a surprise but beneficial to understand how Japanese doctors are trained to present positions at World Health Assemblies, etc. PI plans to attend 21 May webinar by Global Health AJF.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Trip to Tokyo for MOFA Diplomatic Archives. While not directly relevant to Japan, PI has signed contract with Oxford Bibliographies Online for a peer-reviewed entry on the role of the World Bank in international health.
