Outline of Research at the Start

By focusing on a particular population namely queer Chinese migrants in Japan, the goal of this research project is to reveal the intersectionality among gender, sexuality, digital connectivity, and international mobility.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In line with the research plan, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews and digital ethnographic observations with transgender Chinese migrants in Japan, aiming to illuminate how they interpret and navigate various forms of perceived marginalisation and discrimination. A preliminary outcome of this research has been accepted for publication as a peer-reviewed journal article and is currently in press.

Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As outlined in the research plan, the researcher first conducted in-depth interviews and digital ethnographic observations with queer migrants in Japan, with the aim of using the preliminary qualitative findings to inform the design and implementation of a subsequent quantitative survey. The qualitative data collection has been successfully completed as planned, and the researcher is now prepared to proceed with the survey phase.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

While the original research plan proposed a comparative approach, that is, examining the lived experiences of queer Chinese migrants in Japan alongside those of queer migrants of other ethnicities, the category of 'other ethnicities' proved too broadly defined to be analytically useful. As an alternative, the researcher now plans to collect empirical data on queer Chinese migrants in Europe. This revised approach is expected to offer a more focused comparison and better highlight the uniqueness of the Japanese context.
