| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究では、近年発見された新資料を利用し、日本で最初の哲学者と称される西田幾多郎の『善の研究』での自由論の形成の背景と、『善の研究』執筆後、西田がそれをどのように洗練させようとしたかを明らかにする。
具体的には、①『善の研究』執筆以前の思索ノートなどを通して、『善の研究』の自由論が東洋的な思想的伝統から形成されてきたことをあとづけるとともに、②『善の研究』執筆後の講義ノートの中で西田が、同時代の西洋の思想家との関係の中で自由論を洗練・拡張していることを確認する。そのことによって、刊行された『善の研究』では充分に展開されなかった西田の自由論構想の全体像を浮かび上がらせ、その思想的可能性を考察する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, I used recently discovered materials to research the theory of freedom in Kitaro Nishida's An Inquiry into the Good. Part 3 of An Inquiry into the Good, which deals with ethics, was originally written as lecture notes. However, lecture notes, lecture transcripts, and research notes from before and after the lecture have been left behind. Using these new materials, I attempted to reveal the full scope of Nishida's theory of freedom, which was not fully developed in the published version of An Inquiry into the Good.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
『善の研究』第3編のもととなる四高での倫理講義（1906年）の後に、京都大学で行われた倫理学講義の講義ノートや、それ以前の思索ノートを用いることで、西田の自由論が東洋的な思想伝統を背景に形成されてきたこと、また1906年以降に、ベルクソンやJ.M.ギュイヨーなどの思想を取り入れるなどして、自身の自由論を洗練させようとしていたことが明らかになった。西田と東洋的な思想伝統との関係については文献的な証拠が乏しく、この点を、新資料によって補える可能性を示したことは大きな意味を持つ。また、従来、注目されてこなかった西田の自由論が豊かな可能性を持つことを示すことができた。
