無ないし否定の概念は、古来インド思想においては非常に発達し、矛盾律では説明し得ない特殊な否定概念や、二項対立の超越を指向した絶対無などに関心が注がれてきたが、これとは別に矛盾律に反しない否定概念を前提とする論理学的議論も多元的実在論の思想体系では認められる。また無が因果的効力を持ちうるか否かも重要な論争点となった。そのほか認識論の文脈やテキスト解釈における否定辞の意味分析においても無の概念は非常に重要な役割を果たしている。しかし総合的、思想史的あるいは比較思想的研究視点はこれまで乏しかった。研究領域が異なる第一線の研究者の組織的な4年間の共同研究によって画期的な知見を拓くことを目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The present project is an innovative attempt to make a comprehensive study of various phases of thought and arguments concerned with the concept of absence and negation by organizing the core research team consisting of leading scholars of Nyaya-Vaisesika, Vedanta, Mimamsa, Grammar and Buddhist philosophy. 51 papers, 26 oral presentations and 8 books have been produced in connection with this project. Especially noteworthy is a publication of the collection of 11 papers concerned with a comparative study of Indian and Western concepts of nothing, philosophical implication of the grammatical concept of two kinds of the function of a negative particle, and controversies among Nyaya, Mimamsa, Advaita Vedanta and Buddhist philosophy over the ontological and epistemological status of absence or negation. The most advanced achievement has been made with reference to the controversial development of the epistemology of absence between Bhatta Mimamsa and Nyaya (including Navya-nyaya).

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
ゼロを発見したとされるインドにおいて、無（非存在・否定）をめぐる哲学的議論が、この本格的な共同研究によって、各学派に特徴的な存在論や認識論、解脱論などと関連しつつ、学派横断的に共有する問題意識（２種の否定辞機能など）や論理的要請（無限遡及の回避など）のもとで展開する具体的な軌跡が、テキスト実証的に明らかになった。特にニヤーヤ学派とミーマーンサー学派間の非存在認識論争の展開史や、非存在の実在性・因果効力の有無をめぐるニヤーヤ学派と仏教との論争などに関して注目すべき新知見が得られたことは、今後のインド哲学研究の進展にとって画期的な意義を持つと思われる。
