| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、墓の出土品、葬儀に関わる古文書、あるいは民俗調査記録などの「葬墓制資料」を対象に研究を行う。葬墓制資料の中でも銘書の年代、型式学的な厨子の年代観を用いて、これまで琉球史では十分に明らかにされてこなかった社会史、文化史について研究分析を行った。厨子甕の年代観を用いて、これまでに知られていなかった指輪などの装身具文化、髪結いの文化や、百姓身分の食生活に関する分析、あるいは出土厨子を用いた死者数の集計などについて明らかにしてきた。
また、これらの研究の基礎資料となるデータの収集を行った。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project was mainly based on currently available funerary practices materials, essentially for Okinawa. It was performed along the four axes detailed below. Research on the Early Modern Period society: status of the deceased, location, family history, based on textual sources such as funerary inscriptions (mekachi) or other inscriptions surrounding the mekachi, or carved inscriptions on metal or stone. Research on the diet, health and life of the deceased, based on their osteological remains. A broader perspective with regional and / or temporal comparisons held after compilation of the data from the funerary practices materials. An analysis through cultural resource sciences.
Archaeology, crossing the boundaries of archival studies, ethnography, physical anthropology and heritage conservation, managed to lay foundations to seek a new history of ryukyuan society through the use of the funerary practices materials.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の学術的意義は、葬墓制資料研究の確立とこれを社会実装させる点に大きな意義がある。
各地に遺された墓が、琉球の知られざる歴史や文化を明らかにする資料として重要な情報源であることを確認することができた。また、これらの資料について分野を越えて共有することができた点で学術的な意義があった。
一方、現代社会において、墓の継承が問題となっている。都市開発による墓地の移転や管理者により墓じまいされるケースも増加している。現在進行形で琉球墓が急速に姿を消しつつある中で、葬墓制資料の価値を市民とともに共有することができた。研究の最終年度には、成果について報告書を刊行、講座を開催するなど社会的に意義があった。
