Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、最新の衛星観測、客観解析データと数値モデルを用いて、成層圏力学場の変化が熱帯低気圧の発生・発達過程に与える影響を定量的に明らかにする。特にこれまで考慮されてこなかった熱帯低気圧の上部の力学過程の果たす役割を定量的に評価する。
具体的には、観測データを用いて対象事例を選定し、2次元軸対称モデルで熱帯低気圧の上層大気に対する応答実験を実施する。また数値実験の初期値依存性や予測可能性、使用する積雲対流パラメタリゼーションによる積雲活動の特徴の違いといった課題に取り組む。さらに最新の数値モデルの成層圏を高解像度に改良し、より現実的な成層圏力学場による熱帯低気圧への影響を定量的に議論する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The main results obtained are as follows. (1) An axially symmetric typhoon model experiment confirmed that when the upper troposphere is cold, not only does the typhoon become stronger, but it also begins to develop earlier, and that cold air is drawn into the typhoon center, making the typhoon more unstable, before the warm air core develops. (2) An ensemble experiment using the global non-hydrostatic model NICAM suggested that the Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) acts on the large-scale field in the troposphere through the activation of convective activity, affecting not only the density of typhoons but also their distribution. (3) A high-resolution large-scale ensemble climate simulation experiment demonstrated that the tropical convective activity was significantly enhanced in conjunction with the updraft that crosses from the tropical stratosphere to the troposphere during a Northern Hemisphere winter SSW, which has a strong wave forcing in the low-latitude stratosphere.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまで対流圏下・中層に焦点が当てられていた熱帯低気圧の発生および発達過程において、数値実験を用いることで因果関係を明確にし、上層の気温の影響を明らかにする研究である。特に短期的な成層圏力学的現象によって、熱帯低気圧の発生および発達への影響を明らかにするだけでなく、その環境場(背景場)を作り出している広域の対流活動域、さらに対流圏循環場にも影響を与えていることが示唆された。本結果は、今後勢力が増すであろう熱帯低気圧の発生および発達過程において上層大気の環境場を考慮した数値予報モデルの改善に寄与すると考えられる。
