Outline of Research at the Start

Interviews and video documentation has helped to identify differences on how community members can take advantage of solar systems, and the importance of other agents such as NGOs, government, cooperatives and businesses in the success or failure of electrification projects in South East Asia.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In 2023, the project advanced with the comparative study of how electrification affects quality of life. The PI conducted the largest data collection of the project (111 interviews). PV electrification was confirmed to benefit children's education, security and reduced household expenses in the Philippines, while in Malaysia, social interaction and income-generating capacity receive more prominence. The capacity and qualities of the system greatly influence the outcomes. In addition, institutional presence and support is crucial, and other issues such as existing disparities and PV waste management strategies also seem to affect the quality of life in the community. The PI presented these results in two int. conferences, one int. workshop (organised by the research team) and two articles.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Data collection progressed successfully and as planned. The PI also participated in the international conferences scheduled for 2023, presenting the progress in the project’s comparative phase using data from Malaysia and the Philippines. The transcription and translation of data collected in the Philippines progressed well, but the transcription and translation of less than half of the collected interviews in Malaysia has taken longer to complete due to difficulties in finding native translators of Iban into English.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the final fiscal year (April 2024 - March 2025), the project has the following objectives: (1) participation in the 30th Conference of the International Input-Output Association in June 2024, where the PI will present project results and ideas for future research on rural electrification and quality of life; (2) Conduct data collection in the Philippines (Aug 2024); (3) Submit one research article with the latest findings from the comparative analysis between Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia (Feb 2025); (4) Prepare one audio-visual material as a short documentary of the project (Mar 2025); and finally, (5) prepare the final project report (Mar-Apr 2025).
