Outline of Research at the Start

表面融解とは融解の前駆現象として融点よりも低い温度で結晶表面を液膜が覆う現象のことである。本申請では有機結晶を用い、シンプルに分子間相互作用しか働かない有機結晶の表面融解を世界で初めて実空間で検証する。更に、高分解能で且つ高度なその場観察技術を駆使し、液膜の厚さと構造の関係について世界に先駆けてその場観測し、ミクロな視点に踏み込んで表面融解のモデルを構築する。本成果は氷に限定されていた表面融解の学理を有機物質に拡張し、性質の異なる分子選択によって表面融解の制御を可能にする。粒の融合防止や粒成長などの医薬食品への利用、新しい潤滑材の提案など幅広い材料設計エンジニアリングに貢献する。
