Outline of Research at the Start |

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research is to develop brief assessment tools that can measure reinforcement sensitivity in children with ADHD. Two studies are being carried out: (i) to develop a parent questionnaire to assess reinforcement sensitivity of children with ADHD, shown through experimental tasks to be altered in this population; (ii) to develop a computer task to measure the preferences of children with ADHD to different reinforcing stimuli. During this year, I began a scoping review to identify the gap between the results of experimental tasks and existing reinforcement questionnaires for people with ADHD symptoms. Before conducting the scoping review, I submitted the protocol paper (published), including the proposed search strategy. Approximately 5,000 papers were identified through searching three databases using keywords. Independent reviews (including the JSPS fellow) screened these abstracts and 70 were selected for inclusion in the review. I am now finalizing the review results. The findings highlight the different available questionnaires, and in a few studies how they compare with experimental findings. I also conducted semi-structured interviews with several children with ADHD and their parents to understand their use of and responses to reward.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This year’s original goal was to develop a questionnaire to assess reinforcement sensitivity in children with ADHD. Specifically, examining the existing questionnaires and the results of experimental tasks identifying the altered reinforcement sensitivity of ADHD as step towards developing questionnaire items. Ahead of developing the questionnaire items, I decided to start with a scoping review identifying the gap in the relationship between existing questionnaires and experimental tasks. The protocol paper of the scoping review was published in an international journal and presented at the European ADHD conference. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand how parents and their children with ADHD experience and use reward in their daily lives. The results were submitted as poster presentations at a USA conference. This research progress could meet the condition of developing the questionnaire that can precisely measure the altered reward sensitivity of ADHD. From the above research situation, I chose “progressing rather smoothly.”

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
From the above research situation, I could meet the requirements for developing a parent report questionnaire that can measure the altered reinforcement sensitivity of children with ADHD. Therefore, I plan to conduct the following four projects. First, I will summarize the scoping review's result and submit a manuscript to an international journal. Second, I will develop items for the questionnaire with experts about altered reinforcement sensitivity in ADHD. Third, I will conduct a second round of the survey to collect opinions from both experts on this topic and parents with children who have ADHD symptoms. Finally, I will develop an experimental task that measures children's preference for reward stimuli.
