Outline of Research at the Start

北極域での急速な温暖化は、雪氷(積雪、氷床、海氷)の融解を進行させ、陸面や海面を露出させる。その結果、北極域の陸地や海洋から鉱物ダストやバイオエアロゾルなどの自然起源エアロゾルの発生規模や頻度は、将来的に増加することが予測される。これらは北極域の下層雲内での微物理過程に作用することで、北極域での放射収支や降水に大きな影響をもたらす可能性がある。そこで本国際共同研究では、北極域の中でも温暖なグリーンランド南部において、北極域の自然起源エアロゾルがどのように変動し、それらが雲核(氷晶核、雲凝結核)としてどのように寄与するのかを明らかにするための現地調査を実施する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

北極域での急速な温暖化は、雪氷(積雪、氷床、海氷)の融解を進行させ、陸面や海面を露出させる。その結果、北極域の陸地や海洋から鉱物ダストやバイオエアロゾル(気中の微生物)などの自然起源エアロゾルの発生規模や頻度は、将来的に増加することが予測される。これらは北極域の下層雲内での微物理過程に作用することで、北極域での放射収支や降水に大きな影響をもたらす可能性がある。そこで本研究では、北極域の中でも温暖なグリーンランド南部において、北極域の自然起源エアロゾルがどのように変動し、それらが雲核(氷晶核、雲凝結核)としてどのように寄与するのかを明らかにすることを目的とする。現地調査は、日本とスイスの合同研究チームがグリーンランド南部の町・ナルサークに開設するスーパーサイトで実施する。本国際共同研究の遂行によって、「温暖化によって北極域で雪氷が減少した際にエアロゾルや雲の微物理特性に生じる変化」についての先験的な知見が得られることが期待される。
今年度は、2023年夏に日本とスイスの合同研究チームがナルサークのスーパーサイトで実施したエアロゾルの集中観測で得られたエアロゾル試料の分析やデータ解析を進めた。日本の研究チームは、エアロゾルサンプラーによるエアロゾルのサンプリング(主に電子顕微鏡による個々のエアロゾルの大きさ、形状、組成等の詳細分析に使用)やバイオエアロゾル粒子数測定システム(WIBS-NEO)による蛍光性のバイオエアロゾルの数濃度の計測などを担当していたため、主にそれらの試料の分析やデータ解析に取り組み、その成果の速報をGreenFjord General Assembly 2024(2024年11月にスイスのローザンヌとオンラインで開催)等で発表した。

Reason

現在、2023年夏に実施したナルサークのスーパーサイトでの集中観測で得られたデータの解析を進めているところである。本研究の構想段階では、主にグリーンランド南部のローカルな発生源から発生する自然起源エアロゾル(鉱物ダストやバイオエアロゾルなど)の寄与に着目していたが、特にバイオエアロゾルの挙動に関する新たな知見を得ることに成功している。さらにこの集中観測時のデータ解析を進めていく過程で、北米の北方林での大規模な森林火災の発生に伴う越境汚染イベントが、ナルサークで複数回検出されていたこともわかってきており、本研究の構想段階では予測していなかった成果も得られている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

当初の計画では、2025年夏にナルサークのスーパーサイトでのエアロゾル観測を実施する予定だったが、最近になってスイスの研究チーム側の研究計画に変更があり、スーパーサイトではなく、グリーンランド南部での沿岸域での船舶観測を実施することになった。そこで現在、日本の研究チームがどのように関わるかを検討しているところである。その他には、2023年夏にナルサークのスーパーサイトで実施した集中観測で得られた成果の取りまとめを行い、GreenFjord General Assembly 2025(2025年11月にスイスのシオンで開催予定)および国内外の学会での研究発表や論文化を進めていく予定である。
