Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study reveals that in the 19th century, for the purpose of making highly decorated porcelain, the Sevres manufactory developed diverse techniques of decoration, paste (slip), colored glaze and pigment, taking Chinese porcelain of the Qing dynasty as a model, and increased the number of colors made by high temperature firing. In the 19th century, the greatest innovation of Sevres manufactory was the invention of new hard paste porcelain, fired at 1280 degrees same as Chinese porcelain and adapted to various colored glazes and pigments. The decorative technique called “pate-sur-pate” was also devised at this manufactory following Chinese porcelain, but in its Oriental taste for decorative patterns and motifs, Japanese sensitivity was preferred to that of China.
