Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Female autobiographers in the 18th century England called "Scandalous Memoirists" are now attracting scholarly attention. Those female authors have been ignored due to the fact that their writings contain violent expressions normally deemed indecorous and they are outside the canon prescribed by Ian Watt. This study reevaluates these female writings by focusing on their close interconnection with literary conventions, and posits that they are real precursors of canonical literary autobiographers. Scandalous Memoirists activated the 18th century English culture by dint of their energetic power and their innovative representations of foreign cultures such as Jamaica, France and Portugal
