Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This intercultural project deals with oriental images in English illustrated books from the 1860s to the 1930s. Employing a post-colonial matrix of interpretation, it examines the political, social, cultural, and artistic interchanges between Japan (representing “the East”) and Britain (representing “the West”) and the construction of "the Orient" in the British imagination. Special attention is paid to the processes by which oriental images of Japan, China and Islam became intermixed, differentiated and transformed.
