Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Some of the Leibnizian metaphysical terms such as “monad” and “windowless” appear in Beckett’s works, but the purpose and the essence remain unresolved. Focusing upon Beckett’s outstanding use of mathematical calculations and tables in the process of his writings, especially in works such as Watt and How It Is, this study aims at clarifying their unresolved significance in the light of Leibniz’s metaphysics. While texts in general represent fragments and discontinuity, mathematical calculations and tables base themselves on continuity or on an omnipotent viewpoint that stands outside the individual or on a specific time and place. For example, Beckett’s characters try in vain to grasp who and where they are and how they got there from their limited perspectives, Beckett’s calculations and tables, however, refer to an omnipotent point of view that commands a general overview. This study has revealed the ambiguity of Leibniz’s metaphysics as such in Beckett’s works.
