Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between foreign language learners’ level of stress as measured by the stress hormone cortisol and the foreign language course performance as measured by grades. Stress was treated as an independent factor apart from language anxiety. It also aimed to explore the feasibility of adopting physiological measure, hair cortisol, in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), and to examine the differences between a physiological measure and self-report measures (questionnaires). The results indicated that stress negatively affected the course grades. The feasibility of using hair cortisol as an objective index of stress for affective studies in SLA was also confirmed. Furthermore, the study revealed that different measures (physiological vs self-report) for stress do not correlate with each other.
