Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the 19th and the early 20th century, both the United States and France integrated the nation―states while receiving immigrants. At the same time, both countries had nonwhite races within the national borders. It is often discussed that racism and anti-immigrant nativism were constructed in the process of the national integration. Focusing on the French battlefiels during the World War I, this study discusses how racial consciousness or racism of French , British , and American armies as well as French society was constructed while dealing with laborers form China ,soldiers and laborers from French and British colonies and African American soldiers . It can be concluded that racial contacts in various levels constructed racism and racial consciousness in the global context beyond national borders.
