Outline of Final Research Achievements

This KAKENHI was used for a multi-country (Japan and 5 other regions) institutional analysis to examine gender equality in recruitment praxis. This research project explicated mechanisms that had an impact on highly-educated women's employment. For example, the impact on women's employment of Japan's economic hybrid variety of capitalism (VOC) was examined. Since university employment pipelines are generally more direct in Japan than the other regional contexts, it was found that rigidities were exacerbated by male-normative recruitment and promotion, which were based on conscious and unconscious gender stereotypes. Regional factors had variable influences on women's employment, such as: religion; the VOC liberal market economies (LMEs) versus the CMEs; and gender norm ideologies of gender difference versus gender sameness. These factors indicated the complex interrelation of economic, political, and social factors on women's employment.
