Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of gum chewing on the physical response induced by the experimental stress of a calculation task and also investigate relationship of masticatory performance with this effect. Nineteen adult volunteers underwent experimental stress test with 30 min of calculation task. Before and immediately after the stress test, saliva samples were taken. Subjects were then instructed to chew gum for and saliva samples were re-taken at 10 minutes after stress loading. These procedures were repeated but without gum chewing. The saliva samples were used to evaluate levels of the salivary stress marker chromogranin-A (CgA). Masticatory performance of the subject was evaluated with color-changeable chewing gum. The average level of CgA was significantly decreased after gum chewing, whereas CgA levels remained stable without gum chewing. Significant correlation was found between CgA level transition and masticatory performance level.
