Research Abstract |
This study considers the significance about music activities of Ryukichi Sawada who was the first Japanese pianist to hold a piano recital in Japan, and was called the Chopin player. Sawada's musical activity played a pioneering role, as is shown by documents such as early music magazines from the Meiji to the early Showa period, some documents in the possession of his heirs (pictures, a record album and some scores), published music scores, manuscripts, sound source documents (SP records), piano rolls, recordings of the piano competition as a jury, and records of Sawada's activity in foreign places (Taipei and San Francisco) at the dawn of the reception of Western music in Japan. The results of this research were included two papers, three presentations, three concerts with lectures, a book and a music CD.
