Outline of Research at the Start

1921-22年にアメリカで開かれたワシントン会議で、アメリカ、イギリス、日本などの参加国は、中国の不平等状態の改善と海軍軍縮を通じて東アジアで新秩序を創出することに合意した。この国際的な「約束」を履行していくことが、特に日本にとり困難となった理由を、新たな視点から解明することが研究の目的である。
このため、日本外交史に加え、日中関係史、日本政治史、アジア経済史、国際関係理論の専門家による共同研究を組織した。これらの領域で生じた変化が、ワシントン会議での約束の履行を困難にしたと考えられるからである。こうして得られる新視角を用い、日本外交史の専門家が、従来の歴史的な説明を再検討して新解釈を示す。
