本研究は13 世紀を中心とし、その前後の時代を射程にいれながら、西欧中世における人と動物の関係を探るものである。中世における動物論的転回が起きたともされる同時代について、主に二つの観点からアプローチする。第一には表象の領域で、文学や写本挿絵における動物を巡る表現を扱う。第二には言説の領域で、現実における人と動物との関わりや、同時代における動物を巡る規範や理論を扱う。そして両者を統合することで、人間中心主義的と一般化されがちな中世の動物観について分析し、学際的にその特徴と意義を明らかにすることを目指す。
