| Outline of Research at the Start |
We will use mixed methods to examine learner empowerment in students as they engage in filmmaking activities in language classrooms. We will also create a language learning film festival platform for students and examine how participation in such events impacts learner empowerment.

| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To investigate the impact of filmmaking activities on learner empowerment in the language learning context, we administered pre- and post-tests and using LES and qualitative survey data from 3 participant groups and analysis of the first round of data is underway. For the film festival project, we set up the organization and online platform for the event (www.reelvoicesfilmfest.org) and held the first event (Jan 27 through Feb 1, 2025), which featured 10 films, 62 participants (39 student filmmakers and 23 attendees), and collaborated with 2 professional filmmakers for the event. The event exhibited several forms of interaction through judges' ratings and comments, audience polls, live chat, judge's lectures and QnA. We collected feedback on the event through surveys and are using this data to improve the event. We also gave 6 presentations related to filmmaking at language teaching conferences within Japan and contributed a feature article in KOTESOL's The English Connection (TEC) Magazine about getting started with filmmaking with tips and guidelines for teachers.

Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Progress has been smooth in that we were able to collect our first round of data and meet our goal of setting up and piloting the first year of the film festival. We hope to grow the festival and recruit more participants, both within Japan and internationally, in next year's edition. We have received great enthusiasm and response from the community of language teachers who attended presentations related to our project and we published an article aimed at teachers to help get started with filmmaking activities. We hope these activities will lead to more collaborators and participants in our project next year.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Data collection and analysis from more groups for the classroom study will continue as planned next year. We also plan to collect more qualitative data (especially through teacher and student interviews) to reveal classroom features, such as specific task characteristics or types of interactions that may correlate with learner empowerment. We also aim to expand our outreach for the film festival within Japan and Asia and recruit for the next event to be held year and administer the LES scale to a group of participants before and after participating in the event.
