Outline of Research at the Start

1) We plan to conduct a systematic literature review on STE to propose a comprehensive conceptual framework. 2) Based on the framework, we plan to take a qualitative approach and examine the factors influencing STE through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. We will analyze the qualitative data via NVivo. 3) Based on the qualitative results, we plan to conduct a questionnaire survey to examine further how how smartness influences STE and tourist interaction and co-creation from the perspective of tourists. 4) We plan to publish research findings at academic conferences and journals.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The rapid advancement of ICT and smart technologies in the tourism industry has garnered significant academic attention. Consequently, a growing body of research on the topic of Smart Tourism Experience (STE) has emerged in recent years.
1. Our research began with an extensive literature review in the field of STE. The PI screened over 600 relevant articles and finalized a curated sample for a systematic literature review.
2. We investigated the antecedents and outcomes of travel live-streaming experiences and presented our findings at the CAUTHE 2025 conference.
3. The PI has been collaborating with international researchers on a study exploring Japanese consumers' virtual travel experiences, as reflected in their e-WOM. The results will be presented at the AHTMM 2025 conference in July.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Given the substantial and rapidly growing body of research on STE, the systematic literature review took significantly longer than initially anticipated.

On the other hand, in addition to the original research plan, we expanded our scope to study the antecedents and outcomes of Chinese travel live-streaming experiences and Japanese consumers' virtual travel experiences as reflected in their electronic word-of-mouth. These studies have progressed more smoothly than planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

First, we will continue the systematic literature review on STE and synthesize the key thematic findings.

Second, based on the insights gained from the literature review, we will develop a semi-structured interview question list and conduct interviews in the second half of FY 2025.

Third, we will advance our ongoing research on virtual travel experiences and prepare the manuscript for journal submission.
