Outline of Research at the Start	一夫多妻型の家族的なゴリラの群れには、シルバーバックと呼ばれる明確な父親がいる。ゴリラの子供は離乳が早いと言われており、これは父親であるシルバーバックが、母親の育児負担を軽減しているためだと考えられている。しかし、実際にシルバーバックがどのような形で育児に関与しているのか、その実態は十分にわかっていない。本研究では、野生ニシゴリラの１群を対象とする５年間の行動観察を行い、父親シルバーバックは、母親が援助を必要とする場面において、子供のそばにただいることで、育児負担の軽減に貢献している可能性を検討する。本研究は、ヒトを含めた動物に広く共通する「父親役割」の生物学的基盤の理解に繋がると期待される。
