近年、老化の進行度を「生物学的年齢」と呼び、それが「暦年齢」を上回っている人に対して強く介入が行われる事態が生じている。これは集団から得られる統計的指標を個人の正常／異常の基準に転用することで可能となるが、そのためには検査値をカテゴリーに分けることが不可欠である。特に年齢によるカテゴリー分けは、検査値の判断基準をどのような集団に対して設定するかを決定するため、正常／異常の規定の核心である。よって本研究では、19世紀の生理学に関する史料と20世紀の臨床化学・臨床検査医学に関する史料から、年齢による検査値のカテゴリー分けの出現およびそれと個人に対する正常／異常の判断との関係を歴史的に検討する。
