Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research clarified the way how the social position of female intellectuals was constructed and represented through examination of the thoughts and style of Edith Wharton, who was a distinguished woman writer from the latter half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. By studying the influence of the female intellectuals on Wharton, I have elucidated the close connection between the representation of intellect and gender. In addition, through analysis of anti-intellectualism and education at that time, I have reached the conclusion that Wharton had a critical viewpoint about the change of representation of female intellect.
