Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examines the historical process by which the introduction of the Ritsuryo system from ancient China resulted in the establishment of patrilineal institutions in Japan. Specifically, I clarify the foreign nature of patrilineal succession that was based on the On'i system. With respect to residence regulations, I further clarify how the three forms of duolocality, matrilocality, and neolocality constituted a stepwise series among themselves, while patrilocality was absent. The tendencies toward the establishment of patrilineal institutions and matrilocal residency seen in ancient Japanese society were the bilineal society’s response to the importation of concepts and institutions from a patrilineal society and can be understood as a case of a composite culture.
