Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Involuntary autobiographical memories are memories of personal experiences that appear in the mind without any conscious attempt at their retrieval. Environmental stimuli such as sight, sound, and smell can elicit automatically involuntary memories. Previous studies suggest that some people have many involuntary memories whereas others have fewer. We would expect there to be a relationship between features of involuntary memory and personality traits or between features of involuntary memory and cognitive abilities. The controlled field interviewing method, in which participants were asked to report their involuntary memories orally while walking around a fixed route in a real-world setting, was used. Participants also completed some personality and cognitive ability tests. The results showed that the occurrence of involuntary autobiographical memory was related to attentional control ability, associative ability, and self-reflection.
