Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC) are affected by aging, sex, and locus, Estrogens have been suggested to play a suppressive role in CRC, though controversies exist. We focused on postmenopausal colon cancers, and comprehensively examined estrogen-related factors using surgically resected materials, The relation of estrogen concentration or estrogen receptor-beta expression in cancerous tissue vs. non-cancerous tissue was distinctly different according to patients' age (>= 70y/o or < 70 y/o) and locus (left-sided or right-sided), suggesting that pathobiological role of estrogens in colon cancer is different according to patients' age and tumor locus.
