Outline of Final Research Achievements

In recent years, many pharmaceutical companies have shifted their in-house research and development to those implemented in accordance with open innovation strategies through collaboration with academia. In this study, a survey was conducted to examine the current status of collaboration between pharmaceutical companies and academia in drug discovery research, and the results suggest that there have been increases in the numbers of applications for patents jointly submitted by pharmaceutical companies and academia. Efforts solely implemented by academia to accelerate drug discovery research by establishing libraries of chemical compounds are underway in Japan and other countries, and previous studies have suggested a number of published academic papers of studies conducted with the support of these libraries. The results of the survey suggest that various forms of research conducted by academia are expected to contribute to the acceleration of drug discovery research in the future.
