Outline of Final Research Achievements |
I researched in the National Archives in Austria and Germany, and studied the connection between the Habsburg navy and colonialism. This study proved that the navy of the empire “without colony” engaged closely in the Western global colonial system by cultural means such as music or sports, and behaved as an independent actor in the imperial world in East Asia. Thus, by focusing on not “territory” in the land but “navy” in the sea, I succeeded in finding a historical fact that the non-colonial empire was structurally committed to the global colonialism and was a component of it.
