Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Study 1 investigated if dispositional optimism, and the importance that a participant assigned to stressful events interacted to predict their coping behavior. The results indicated that the importance participants assigned to stressful events moderated the relationship between dispositional optimism and positive interpretations. It was concluded that optimistic individuals used positive interpretations for highly important events, whereas they did not do so for less- important events. Study 2 investigated if the goal-shielding effect were particularly pronounced in individuals with high dispositional optimism. Results indicated that individuals with high dispositional optimism were likely to inhibit alternative goals when they attached high importance to an initial goal. These findings suggest that highly optimistic individuals inhibit alternative goals, which plays a valuable role in the process of goal pursuit.
