Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Focusing on the Muromachi period ink paintings Ike Taiga (1723-1776) copied and studied, the research aimed to clarify the original sources of the inscriptions given on the paintings as well as the expression style of the paintings themselves. In Japanese art history, it has been generally understood that Japanese literati painting developed out of admiration towards China. With this view, the Japanese ink painting study tended to focus on the influence from Chinese painting. Through this research, it has become clear that the works of major medieval Japanese ink painting artists, such as Josetsu, Shubun, Sesshu and their succesors including Koetsu and Hakuin, provided the breakthrough in Taiga’s painting style leading to its maturity in his forties. The Muromachi-period Japanese ink paintings were another major source of influence and was brand-like in importance. The discovery points out to the need for reconsideration in future studies of mentality of Japanese literati painters.
