| Outline of Research at the Start |
北海道島の住民は過去数千年間にわたって海洋資源に高く依存した性格を送ってきたことが判明しているが，海洋資源の増減の有無や，それが人類社会にあたえた影響はほとんど解明されていない。この研究では，考古学的な遺跡から出土した海獣と海鳥を利用してこの問題に取り組むとともに，こうした動物の過去の生態やそれらが属していた生態系の長期的な変遷の解明も目指している。遺跡出土の動物遺体は従来，生業や狩猟技術など人類の歴史復元に役立てるために利用されてきたが，本研究では歴史生態学の資料としての側面に着目することで考古資料・埋蔵文化財の価値を高め，考古学と生態学のあいだの垣根を低くし，学融合を促す効果が期待される。
