Outline of Research at the Start

いわゆる伝統的な日本文化を捉える上で、〈和漢〉の対比構造が指摘されて久しい。ただし、狭義の文化史の枠をはみ出し、この構図を外交史に衍用する動きは皆無に近い。本研究課題では外交儀礼を軸にこの課題に取り組む。ここで言う外交儀礼とは、同儀礼の前後に執行される宴会や外交使節の通交経路、その宿泊場所、さらには外交文書類も含みこむ。要するに権力論そのものであり、「外交文化」研究と言ってもよかろう。これまでも、広義の外交儀礼研究はなされてきたが、それを思想史や文化史に意識的に昇華させる試みは絶無であった。本研究により、日本近代のナショナリズムを醸成した前近代日本のエスノセントリズムの詳細が見えてくるだろう。
